Product Description: This Anointing Spoon is made from 22ct gold plated lead-free pewter. It is a miniature model of the anointing spoon used in the coronation of a king or queen of England. It is supplied with a full-colour information card that has images of coronation objects and two queens on the front. There is also historical information which explains how the spoon is used in the coronation. The spoon, held in place, and card are supplied in a clear presentation box.
Information: The coronation of a new sovereign is staged in Westminster Abbey, where every King and Queen of England, with the exception of Edward V and Edward VIII, has been crowned since King Harold II in 1066.
The two oldest objects used in the coronation ceremony are the ampulla and the anointing spoon. The ampulla is gold and in the shape of an eagle. The silver gilt anointing spoon dates back to the 12th century. The stem is chased and set with four pearls. There is evidence that the spoon was used at the coronation of King John in 1199.
At the anointing ceremony, holy oil is poured from the ampulla, into the spoon. The officiating Bishop or Archbishop then applies this to the new Sovereign’s head, breast and palms.
