Product Description: This Miniature Army Gold Medal is made from lead-free pewter that is 22ct gold plated. It is supplied with approximately 9cm of ribbon. The medal is mounted on an information card that is full colour with an image of the duke of Wellington on the front and has historical information about the medal and the Duke Of Wellington on the reverse.
Information: Obverse – Britannia seated on a globe holding a laurel wreath over the British lion and holding a palm branch in her left hand while resting on a shield embellished with the Union Jack. The name of the first action is usually engraved on the reverse.
Instituted in 1810 these medals were struck in two sizes. Large medals were awarded to generals and the smaller on officers of field rank for actions during the Peninsular war 1806 – 14 and was of 1812.
The Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), was a British soldier and stateman who was known as The Iron Duke. He became famous as the general who overcame the armies of Napoleon in Spain and Portugal, and defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Later Wellington became prime minister. He died at Walmer Castle where he lay in state for two months and was later buried at St Paul’s Cathedral.
