Information: The English Civil War was a series of armed conflicts that took place between 1642 and 1651. The war pitted the Royalists, who supported King Charles I and the monarchy, against the Parliamentarians, who were led by Oliver Cromwell and sought greater political power for Parliament. During the conflicts, such as Newark Castle, coins were struck to pay the troops. These coins were often in unusual shapes such as lozenge or octagonal and even cut directly from silver tableware. The war saw major battles, and resulted in the eventual defeat of the Royalists and the execution of King Charles I.
