Information: A fossil is the naturally preserved remains, impression or traces of animals or plants the lived in the geologic past. To become a fossil the animal or plant has to be buried before it is eaten or rots away. The can sink into the mud in the bottom of rivers or oceans or under sand. Once buried the body tissues of the creature or plant are replaced by minerals which over a long period of time turn to stone. The surrounding mud or sand then turns to rock which is where most fossils are found. Most laid buried for millions of years.
