Information: This style of bascinet helmet dates from the 14th century. Early bascinet helmets were open-faced combat helmets. Through the evolution of the helmet design a mail curtain was attached and then later this was replaced by a metal visor. From around 1380 the visor, by this time considerably larger than earlier forms, was drawn out into a conical point like a muzzle or a beak, as per our example.
