Product Description: This George V Penny Key-Ring is made using an original penny coin of George V. It is supplied on a quality key-chain. Information: The first pennies were struck in the eighth century and were made from silver. It was not until 1797 that pennies were made from copper and then in 1860 that they were made of bronze. These pennies had the image of the seated Britannia on the reverse. During this time, there were 240 pennies to the pound, with twelve pence in a shilling and 20 shillings in a pound.
The pennies of George V, George VI and Elizabeth II are all bronze pennies. There are slight differences in the design of Britannia on the reverse and the bust of the reigning monarch and associated inscriptions also changed. The composition of these bronze coins also changed during the reign of these monarchs.
The large penny ceased production in 1970 and the denomination that had served the country for well over 1200 years was decimalised. Thereafter the new penny carried a value of 1/100th of a pound.
