Product Description: This Poppy pencil topper is made from lead-free pewter and is a 3D model of a Poppy flower. It is supplied on a 13cm red pencil with the inscription "World War I 1914-18" against the silhouette of British troops, some carrying a wounded soldier, printed in black.
Information: After the First World War the poppy was adopted as a symbol of Remembrance. Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, who served in the war, was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields to write a now famous poem called ‘In Flanders Fields’. Its opening lines refer to the many poppies that were the first flowers to grow in the churned-up earth of soldiers’ graves in Flanders, a region of Belgium.
