Information: Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the largest meat-eating dinosaurs that ever lived. It had a thick, heavy skull and a four foot long jaw that was designed for bone-crushing. Fossil evidence shows that tyrannosaurus was about 40 feet long and about 15 to 20 feet tall. Its serrated, conical teeth were most likely used to pierce and grip flesh, which it then ripped away. Its two-fingered forearms could probably seize prey, but they were too short to reach its mouth.
A Stegosaurus was an armoured herbivore (plant eater) from the late Jurassic Period. A group of dinosaurs called Theropods were the killers of the dinosaur world. They would catch and kill their prey as well as scavenging for dead creatures. Flying reptiles called pterosaurs soared through the air while sea reptiles like the plesiosaurus and ichthyosaurus lived in the sea. Archaeopteryx is one of the oldest known prehistoric birds. It had teeth, feathers and three-claws on each wing.
During the Devonian Period primitive sharks became more numerous as well as the first ammonite molluscs and trilobites. Triassic Period – The first dinosaurs and pterosaurs (flying reptiles) appeared. Jurassic Period – Saw gigantic herbivore (plant-eating) and carnivorous (meat-eating) dinosaurs. Cretaceous Period – Saw a great extinction of many species, including dinosaurs. Birds, small reptiles, insects, mammals and many marine creatures survived.
Mammoths were similar to elephants with long curved tusks and were covered in long hair. A large mammoth population roamed over broad stretches of the earth at the same time as early man. These mammoths would be hunted for food and for their bones that would be carved into tools. As well as eating meat, people gathered fruit, nuts, roots and seeds.
