Information: Flying reptiles were called Pterosaurs and were the first every flying vertebrates (animals with a backbone). Their wings were a thin membrane of elastic fibres and muscle covered with skin and they were carnivores eating fish, insects and small animals. There were two groups of Pterosaurs – some had short heads, sharp teeth and long tails and the others had long necks, long heads and short tails. The latter included the largest reptiles to take to the air with wingspans over 12m.

Pterosaurs appeared during the Triassic period and become extinct the same time as the dinosaurs at the end of the Jurassic period.
