Roman Educational Colouring Postcards

Product Description: The Roman Colouring Postcards consists of four A5 size colouring cards and six colouring pencils. The cards include a single image of the Romans fighting the Celts, Roman soldiers at Hadrian’s Wall, gladiators fighting and Roman baths. On the reverse of each card is an area to write a message, an address and to affix a stamp as well as educational information about the images on each card. There is a colourful header card that has pictures showing how the cards could be coloured in and all are held in a clear cellophane bag.

Information: In AD 43 the Roman Emperor Claudius invaded Britain with his army and defeated many of the Celtic tribes. The Celts would decorate their bodies with a blue woad and comb their hair with lime to look frightening.

The Roman army consisted of many different types of soldier. There were legionaries armed with spears (pila) and a sword (gladius). There was also the standard bearer (signifer) and cavalry. Walls and fortifications were built by the Romans to protect themselves from enemy tribes.

Gladiators were professional fighters who fought against each other, wild animals and condemned criminals, sometimes to the death, for the entertainment of the crown. The gladiators shown on the card are a retiarus with ned and trident and a secutor with sword and shield.

Public baths were places where people could go to bathe, meet and discuss business. There were hot and cold baths as well as massage rooms. There was no soap so people used oil which was scraped off the bods with a curved tool called a strigil.
