Information: To be a Legionary soldier, you had to be a Roman Citizen. Legionaries were expected to fight, but they also built essential facilities such as forts, bridges, and roads.
As well as weapons the shield would be very important to the Legionary soldier. The scutum shield was a large rectangular curved shield made from three sheets of wood glued together and covered with canvas and leather, usually with a spindle shaped boss along the vertical length of the shield. When fighting enemies armed with swords and spears, the shield offered much needed protection.
