Product Description: The Roman Infantry Ruler is plastic and measures 30cm long. It shows measurements in both inches and centimetres. On the inches scale it includes units of 1/16 of an inch and on the centimetre side units of 1 millimetre.

On the front of the ruler are images of the banners of the 4 legions of Emperor Claudius that invaded Britain. There are also eagle banners on each side of the title with the abbreviation SPQR, for Senatus Populusque Romanus meaning "The Senate and People of Rome".

On the reverse of the ruler is another SPQR banner and pictures of a centurion, legionary, standard bearer and vexillium. There is also historical information about the Roman Army.

Information: The Roman army was made up of groups of soldiers called legions. There were over 5,400 soldiers in a legion with each legion having its own number, name, badge and fortress. In AD 43, the Emperor Claudius invaded Britain with 4 legions: II Augusta, IX Hispana, XIV Gemina and XX Valeria Victrix.

  • Contubernium: consisted of 8 soldiers (Legionnaires).
  • Centuria: (Century) a total of 80 soldiers and 20 other men commanded by a Centurion.
  • Cohort: (Cohort) 6 Centuries, a total of 480 men and their staff. The First Cohort consisted of 6 double Centuries.
  • Legio: (Legion) consisted of 10 cohorts, around 5,400 men.
  • Eques Legionis: Each Legio had a cavalry unit attached to them.
