Information: The sabre-toothed tiger, more accurately known as Smilodon, was a prehistoric felid that roamed the Earth from approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. Characterised by its distinctive pair of long, curved canine teeth, which could measure up to 28 centimetres in length, Smilodon was well-adapted for hunting large herbivores. Despite its name, it was not a true tiger and belonged to a distinct lineage of felids. With a robust build and powerful forelimbs, it likely ambushed its prey, using its formidable canines to deliver a precise, lethal bite. The extinction of the sabre-toothed tiger is thought to be linked to environmental changes and the decline of megafauna at the end of the Pleistocene.
