Set of 4 Knights in Pack

Product Description: This set of 4 Knights figures, each measuring 4cm tall, are made from lead-free pewter. The four different figures in the pack are a c.1300AD knight, c.1400AD knight and two c.1400-1500AD knights. The supplied information card is full colour with an image of knights in battle on the front and has historical information on the reverse, together with additional images. The figures and card are held in a clear clam-shell pack.

Information: The knights of the Middle Ages were soldiers that fought on horseback with their principal weapons a lance and sword. Knights played the most important part in warfare from 900 to 1500 AD because foot soldiers of the time were no match for them.

The main body armour worn by early knights was chainmail, which consisted of many small linked iron rings. During the 12th century knights started wearing more chainmail that covered their arms and legs. A padded garment called an aketon was also worn below the mail to absorb blows.

In the 14th century knights increasingly added steel plates to protect their limbs, and the body was often protected further with a coat-of-plates. By the 15th century some knights wore full suits of plate armour.

The lance and the sword were the knight’s primary weapons, with the mace becoming popular in the 14th century. A mounted knight would usually charge his opponent with his lance before using his sword or mace. Other weapons used included the short axe, daggers and the double-handed great sword.

The sword was the knight’s most important weapon. Until the late 13th century the double-edged sword was used in battle. But as plate armour became more popular more pointed swords were used, as they were better for thrusting through gaps between the plates.
