Set of 4 Scottish Figures in Pack

Product Description: This set of 4 Scottish figures, each measuring 4cm tall, are made from lead-free pewter. The four different figures in the pack are field officer, drum major, corporal and piper. The supplied information card is full colour with a tartan pattern on the front. It has historical information on the reverse, together with images of a Scottish flag and a piper. The figures and card are held in a clear clam-shell pack.

Information: The Scottish regiments are known as the Lowland regiments and the Highland regiments.

The first Lowland regiment, The Royal Scots, dates from c.1633 with The Royal Scots Fusiliers and The King’s Own Scottish Borderers being raised in 1678 and 1689 respectively. Throughout the 17th, 18th and most of the 19th centuries these Scottish regiments served widely and with distinction. Their uniform was similar to the line infantry of the British Army until 1881 when a modified form of Scottish Dress was adopted comprising of doublets, a type of double-breasted jacket, and tartan trews, a traditional form of trouser.

The original Highland regiments were raised in the 18th century with the object of recruiting solely from the Scottish Highlands. They were called the Highland regiments due to their adopting of Highland dress, the kilt. Due to the Highlands becoming less populated through the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Highland regiments recruited from the Lowland Scots and others. The major exceptions to this rule were during World War I and World War II, when many Highland men joined up.

During the first year of World War II the kilt was officially banned as combat dress, due to being impractical for modern warfare. The Scottish regiments now wear their kilts as part of their 'dress uniform'.

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo has the finest military bands, bagpipers, drummers and brass bands in the world performing nightly every August on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade against the backdrop of the spectacular and historic Edinburgh Castle.
