Information: The Spitfire is the most famous British fighter aircraft of all time, designed by R.J. Mitchell, and based on his very fast, pre-war seaplane, the S6. The Spitfire MK1 was powered by a 1,030-hp Rolls Royce Merlin engine and had a top speed of 365 mph. It was armed with 8 x .303 Browning machine guns mounted in the wings, which proved very effective against both fighters and bombers. The plane had an elliptical wing with a thin cross-section, allowing a higher top speed and manoeuvrability than the Hurricane and other contemporary designs; is also resulted in a distinctive appearance.
Much loved by its pilots, the Spitfire saw service during the whole of World War II, in all theatres of war, and in many different variants, although it will be most remembered for its part in the Battle of Britain.
