Product Description: The George VI Threepence coin pack contains an original threepence coin of George VI. The double-sided pack has a hole in which the coin is held in a clear blister, this allows both the obverse and reverse to be clearly seen. The full colour card shows the royal coat of arms on the front. There is historical information about the threepence on the back.
Information: The threepence coin first appeared in England as a silver coin during the reign of Edward VI. Although still silver, during the early 20th century the threepence had become unpopular, due to its small size. It was decided that a new more substantial coin would be introduced and whilst the silver threepence continued to be minted up until 1945 a new larger, nickel-brass, twelve-sized threepence was introduced in 1937.
The first nickel-brass threepence coins circulated had the bust of George VI on the obverse and a three-headed thrift plant on the reverse. The dimensions of the threepence remained unchanged during the reign o Elizabeth II with her bust on the obverse and a Tudor portcullis on the reverse.
Following decimalisation, the threepence ceased to be legal tender after 31st August 1971 and the denomination that had served the country for over 400 years was gone.
