Product Description: This Viking Coin Set of 3 Coins has reproduction coins of the Vikings attached to the front of a card. The coins are a St Peter Penny, Anlaf Guthfrithsson penny and a Eric Blood-axe penny. Each was moulded directly from an original coin and is made from lead-free pewter. The coins are double-sided and are stuck onto the information card. The coin set has an image of a Viking coin on the front and historical information about the Vikings and their coinage on the reverse.

Information: The Vikings only had one type of coin called a penningar (or penny) made of silver. These coins were copied from the Anglo-Saxon coins used at the time the Vikings started raiding England. The coins did not need to be stamped with their values as they were made of silver and could be weighed to check their worth.

If a Viking King wanted a long reign he needed to make sure he had the support of the Christian Anglo-Saxons and pagan Vikings. By using symbolism on their coins they could create coins which appeased both parties.

St Peter penny- obv: the letters SCI PE TR MO, a latin abbreviation of ‘St Peter’s coinage’ as well as a Viking sword, trefoil and hammer.

Anlaf Guthfrithsson penny – obv: the raven, a symbol of the Viking god Odin but also of St Oswald, a Northumbrian Royal Saint.

Eric Blood-axe penny – obv: The letters ERIC REX meaning King Eric with sword and triple pellets.
