Information: The sword was made up of a basic three-part hilt (handle) and a blade. The basic design of the Viking sword lasted until the middle ages.

The hilt comprised of the Pommel, a knob at the end of the sword designed to balance it and usually made from iron. The Grip, designed to be held in one hand, was often made from wood wrapped with leather. Finally, there was the Crossguard that protected the hand.

The blade was made from steel and varied in length from 71 to 84 centimetres. It was usually double-edged and had a long channel down the centre.

A number of Viking swords have been found with ornate decoration on the hilt. This decoration included the use of precious metals and gemstones.
